well thunderstorms are one of the worst because of the wind shear and strong downdraft associated with them.

At the departure airport, the about the only thing locally that would delay the take of would be a thunderstorm directly over the airport or right in the departure path. Any steady wind short of a hurricane would not be likely to delay departure. You should know that thunderstorms are pretty common in summer, but most of them are relatively small and isolated, so airliners just fly around them. The link below is a great example of how airliners handle thunderstorms - it shows the movements of the entire FedEx fleet as a thunderstorm arrives at their Memphis hub as they are all inbound. http://www.alexisparkinn.com/photogallery/Videos/2006-5-5_FedExDiversions.wmv

Low/nill visibility on the ground at either the departure or arriving airport. Snow, Ice on the runway.Strong winds,(> 20-25mph)at ground level, Severe Thunderstorms in the vicinity of the airport, Hurricane, etc.
